Where Are You Headed?
Two Huge Steps to Clarity of Vision
Last week we talked about how to create a vision for your mastermind group. Today, we’re going to talk about two huge steps to keep it as clear as possible.
Do you find this process fun and inspiring? Or does it cause you to question where things are headed? Either way, I want you to know it’s okay to have mixed feelings when you design the future of your online mastermind groups.
A clear, inspiring vision, outlining where you want to be is vital to the success of anything you do. Going through life without a vision is like trying to go on a trip without a destination. As baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else.”
Yogi was known for telling the truth about life, while having fun with words. If we’re not clear on our destination, we’ll get sidetracked easily. Then we’ll wake up one day, completely in the sticks - lost, confused, and frustrated.
I want to give you advice on what to look out for. It’s easy, after crafting a vision, to be full of clarity and confidence. I wish there was some “button” you could push to keep yourself and your mastermind business in that frame of mind. Sadly, there’s no such button. It’s up to us to pay attention to what we let into our minds and schedules.

A Clearly Defined Map
Lack of clarity can lead us to unintended places. We’ll waste time and energy on things that aren’t essential. It’s all too easy to think any opportunity will move you closer to your goal ... because it will! Doing anything will move you closer to something.
But it might not be the “something” you want.
Where do you say “Yes,” when you should say “No”? Many people who lead mastermind groups online struggle with this, because they think it’s their job to help everybody. Let me remind you, “If you help everybody, you don’t really help anybody.”
Think about it: if you have a business mastermind that’s for “anybody who wants to see growth,” you won’t attract the people you’re looking for. However, if you have a mastermind for CEOs, aged 40-60, who are mothers and enjoy reading, you’re much clearer about who you serve.
And so is your audience. Young men in their twenties starting businesses can easily tell, “That mastermind group is not for me”! Nobody, including you, is confused.
How to “Spread Your Vision Thick”
Successful visions are singular, for each area of your life. This means it becomes your primary focus. You’ll certainly have other roles in life that need your focus. But don’t get caught up in having multiple, competing visions for your business, or family. Pick one and FOCUS - “Follow one course until successful.”
To get clear on what you want for your online mastermind group, take a look at the Mastermind Playbook.
People think “focus” means saying “Yes” to things you have to focus on, but that's only part of it. You also have to say “No” to many other good ideas, so you can maintain your focus. If your work ethic and network are big enough, you’ll be on everybody’s radar. That’s a good thing, but the downside is you’ll be flooded with opportunities, and most of them won’t apply.
Everybody you know will ask you to work on a project, serve on a board, or participate in an activity. As you start out, that may seem like a dream come true. But as you grow further into your career, it’ll lead to a schedule bursting at the seams. You’ll be overwhelmed.
How do you limit overwhelm and ensure you deliver results for you and your mastermind groups?
Last week, we introduced the concept of a “vision script.” This comes from Michael Hyatt, author of “The Vision Driven Leader.” A vision script is your guide to a better life and business. It helps you state clearly who you want to become.
When new opportunities spring up, it’s easy to say “yes.” If you don’t have a clear end goal, anything can seem worth taking. But there’s an even bigger chance, it won’t be worth it. It may take you in the opposite direction: away from what you actually want. Don’t ignore your DISC profile here, if you tend to jump at any opportunity.
By writing and consulting your vision script, you’ll know if an opportunity’s worth taking. “Does this bring me closer to my vision, or further away?” is how you frame it. If it does, look into it further. Remember, it has to align with your schedule and values. If it doesn’t, you’re free to politely decline. Decision making is 100% easier!
